Background of the Study
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality globally, especially in low-resource settings. The timely recognition and management of PPH are critical to preventing maternal deaths. Nurses, who are often the first healthcare providers to attend to women after childbirth, play a crucial role in managing postpartum hemorrhage. Their knowledge of PPH management protocols and adherence to these guidelines are essential in ensuring positive maternal outcomes.
In Taraba State, where maternal mortality remains high, assessing nurses’ knowledge and adherence to postpartum hemorrhage management protocols is vital for improving care and reducing mortality rates. This study seeks to evaluate nurses' knowledge and adherence to PPH management protocols and identify factors influencing these practices.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of postpartum hemorrhage management protocols, many nurses in Taraba State may not be fully equipped to recognize or manage PPH effectively. This lack of knowledge and adherence to protocols could contribute to avoidable maternal deaths. This study will assess the level of knowledge and adherence to PPH management protocols among nurses in Taraba State and explore potential areas for improvement.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate nurses’ knowledge of postpartum hemorrhage management protocols in Taraba State.
To assess the level of adherence to postpartum hemorrhage management protocols by nurses in Taraba State.
To identify factors influencing the adherence to postpartum hemorrhage management protocols in Taraba State.
Research Questions
What is the level of knowledge among nurses in Taraba State regarding postpartum hemorrhage management protocols?
To what extent do nurses in Taraba State adhere to postpartum hemorrhage management protocols?
What factors influence nurses’ adherence to postpartum hemorrhage management protocols in Taraba State?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses in Taraba State have inadequate knowledge of postpartum hemorrhage management protocols.
Adherence to postpartum hemorrhage management protocols is low among nurses in Taraba State.
Factors such as inadequate training and resources significantly influence nurses’ adherence to postpartum hemorrhage management protocols in Taraba State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on healthcare facilities in Taraba State, particularly those providing maternity services. Limitations may include variability in training programs and resource availability across different hospitals in the state.
Definitions of Terms
